For most of us Sharks provoke pictures of big teeth, fear and Jaws but for Ocean Ramsey they are not only a picture of beauty but the most intrinsic piece in the ocean ecology puzzle and her wetsuit range showcases her dedication. Ocean Ramsey’s impressive work in spreading positive awareness for sharks has landed her a special range of diving and surfing gear, called the Water Inspired Range, from world wetsuit leaders XCEL and we couldn’t be more stoked to be the exclusive retailer to sell this gear in Australia.
Tiger Sharks carry serious connotations and have been scapegoated as a mindless murdering machine but these mummas of the ocean are everything but.
One of our favourite pieces from the Ocean Ramsey range is the 5mm 2 piece freediving wetsuit that features a back-zip entry, not a beaver tail entry like most 2 piece wetsuits. The reason for this is that the top part of the suit doubles as a long-sleeve spring suits! That's two suits for the price of one.
As an apex predator, Shark’s impact on the food chain is the most comprehensively important and as ‘the white blood cells of the ocean’ they maintain the balance of the species below them. The current explosion in jellyfish populations is posing an imminent threat which has arisen out of our sever mismanagement of shark populations to the point we can estimate roughly 70 million sharks die to the hands of man each year.
It’s easy to see why Ocean’s shark endeavours have taken the world by storm but her love doesn’t lie just in the Apex sharks but the species as a whole and to celebrate diversity her range features prints from Whale Sharks and Galapagos sharks. Each and every shark plays a vital role in our oceans and to ensure our future is to ensure their survival. Many of the non-predatorial sharks are the ones taking care of 'cleansing' the ocean.
The wetsuit range is produced by Xcel and fits within their AXIS series of wetties. These suits feature Xcel’s premium Japanese Limestone Neoprene in the wetsuits which takes a whole new approach to wetsuit materiality. Typically wetsuits are made from polychloroprene chips derived from a bi-product of the oil production whereas Limestone Neoprene us produced from mining Calcium Carbonate [old coral reefs] which is then cooked, basically… These processes are incredibly complex but all we need to know is Ocean’s wetsuits are helping us take a step away from oil dependancy.
Another key feature to the Ocean Ramsey Water Inspired is the glued and blind stitched seam, this is a highly stretchy sealed seam that is not only supremely comfy but denies the entrance of water through the seams, creating drastically warmer suits than their flat lock counterparts but you can read more about that here.
