While open water swimming is attractive for the space, the scenery and the challenge, it also puts you in a position of elevated risk (compared to say pool swimming). Making sure you've got the right basic equipment for a safe swim is important if you want to avoid issues in the water.
One of the big issues with an ocean swim is your visibility to others in the water. From the perspective of someone in a boat or some form of watercraft, you're not always the easiest thing to spot. That's what makes attaching a high-vis and low-drag swim float so attractive. They also offer extra buoyancy for if you start to cramp up and need something to hang onto, and even act as a storage space for your small valuables.
