Sharkbanz 2.0 Shark Deterrent Bands are active shark-deterrence devices that use a strong magnet to create disturbance waves that impede on the electro-receptors sharks use to navigate the oceans and to locate living prey. Every muscular movement creates small electrical signals that can be detected by the shark's electro-receptors, called Ampulae of Lorenzini, which are primarily a mechanism for navigation but they assist in locating living prey within the last few meters. As a shark moves through the magnetic field of the earth, the field creates charges in these electro-receptors (due to electromagnetic induction) and the idea behind these bands is that they create 'sensory overload' in these organs, similar to a human listening to suuper loud music or staring into the sun.

Sharkbanz emit a strong and constant magnetic field which can damage magnetic memory like credit cards - Sharkbanz are supplied in magnetic-field-reducing packaging that makes them safe in your dive bag, next to your wallet or on a plane.

Sharks can spend many minutes assessing the potential of a possible target and rely on multiple senses to do so, these include sight, electro-reception, pressure changes and olfactory (smell and taste).  A shark will circle at a distance, sizing you up visually whilst defining physiology through pressure, if they're still intrigued they will make close passes in order to smell and taste you, and if they're still intrigued they'll make closer passes to make use of the Ampulae of Lorenzini. It is in this last phase that Sharkbanz prove to be most effective in deterrence. More often then not, you will have zero idea this is occurring underneath you and in shark-world this is your chance to present your defence case, which is why surface-water sports people are much more likely to be attacked than divers, also divers prefer diving in good visibility, surfers/swimmers etc don't really mind, and the fact they swim in the shore, where there is foam and sand, does them no favours...

Unlike electromagnetic shark deterrent devices, that rely on battery-powered magnetic pulses, the Sharkbanz 2.0 Band requires no battery and the best bit is that the deterrence mechanism is constant, because it's magnetic - unlike electromagnetic deterrence devices that pulse intermittently. 

Do Sharkbanz Work?

Lets address the elephant in the room: do these work?  There's plenty of research to suggest it works and they've got a tonne of videos suggesting that. We have found a possible source for this concept in a few journals and what's cool is the use of magnetic deterrents has resulted from the desire to reduce shark by-catch, which is a commercial endeavour but the less sharks getting caught the better, we already catch 70-100 million a year....  At the end of the day, for an Australia citizen, the chances of being attacked by a shark are essentially 0, technically they are 1 in 3,748,067, but as ocean lovers we know that sharks aren't always hunting and for every one shark you see, another 100 have seen you, but they don't attack.  You don't become a 400million year old sub-class without knowing when to attack and when to abstain.

Sharkbanz for Surfing, Swimming and Diving

The great thing about Sharkbanz is they're suitable for surfers, divers and swimmers because of their small size.  In Australia we focus on how sharks interact with Surfers, perhaps because it's surfers that typically put themselves in harms way by surfing on murky river-mouths at dusk. However, of the 1-2 fatal shark attacks recorded world-wide each year, it's usually a swimmer or wader.
