A board bag is an essential item for anyone with some fibreglass under their arm. Board bags come in a variety of dimensions and designs to suit a range of needs, so your board’s dimensions and how you plan on transporting/storing it will influence what’s best for you.
For starters, picking the right length board bag is easy. A 6’0” bag is intended to fit a 6’0” board. Just make sure you check the width of your board vs the bag width. There’s a range of design styles to pick from, but there’s a few benefits you’ll get out of your standard board bag:
- Insulation from heat
- Protection from water
- Padded protection to prevent dings
- Carry handles and/or straps to aid transport
The big ones to consider are heat and ding protection. When your board gets too hot, for example if it’s left inside a stinking hot car, you’ll start to see bubbles form on the surface of the fibreglass, and it’ll even accelerate the ageing process. So, it’s in your best interest to keep your board cool. When it comes to board dings, they aren’t just bad because they don’t look pretty. Dings can affect the structural integrity and potentially allow water to infiltrate the interior foam, waterlogging your board.
