The Adrenalin Story
If you’ve spent any arvo paddling out at Avalon Beach, you’ll know that surfing is more than just a sport—it’s a way of life.Back in the early ’90s, when the Aussie economy took a nosedive and went into the terrible recession, the surf scene on Sydney’s Northern Beaches was buzzing, but the big brand wetsuit was out of reach for many. The waves were calling, but for heaps of grommets and salty veterans alike. Their choices were often just a in second-hand, patched-up suits that had seen better days.
Enter the Axfords—a local family who ran a small sports, surf, and fishing shop smack bang in the heart of Avalon. Their lives revolved around the water: surfing, swimming, fishing, lifesaving, sailing, spearfishing. They have just started a wholesale and importing extension of their sports store. With sons Joshua and Adam surfing every morning before school and getting amongst it, the family understood the stoke and the struggle of staying warm in dodgy gear. The surf shop wasn’t just a business—it was a community hub, a place where stories were swapped, and the love for the ocean was shared.
The recession hit hard, and the Axfords saw firsthand how the cost of new wetsuits kept young surfers off the waves. It was heartbreaking watching mates miss out or shiver through their sessions in gear that barely held together. That frustration sparked an idea—what if they could make top-notch wetsuits that didn’t cost a fortune? With a background in dive suits, the Axfords set out to change the game for Aussie surfers.
Teaming up with Sheico, a trailblazing Taiwanese company known for its cutting-edge Neoprene, and later a state-owned wetsuit factory in China, the Axfords developed an innovative, efficient production system. They stuck to the best materials:Sheico Neoprene — and YKK Zips — no compromises. Their approach was simple: focus on one steamer and — one spring suit at a time, run a six-day production cycle, and keep the quality dialled in—and the cost way down.
Just as flatlock stitching was emerging in wetsuit technology, Adrenalin jumped on board. Flatlock meant no more rashes, heaps more strength, extra durability, and—crucially—faster, more affordable production. For the first time anywhere, every wetsuit Adrenalin made —rocked 100% flatlock stitching, delivering the kind of comfort and reliability that surfers crave—and at half the price of the big-name brands.
But it wasn’t just about saving dollars. Adrenalin believed in their suits so much they offered the first Lifetime Warranty in the world for wetsuits—a promise to surfers that the gear — would keep up, session after session. No matter how gnarly the conditions, Adrenalin stood behind their craftsmanship, making sure every surfer could chase the next set without —worrying about their gear falling apart.
Fast forward to today, and Adrenalin Wetsuits is still all about keeping you in the water—whether you’re carving at dawn or just soaking up a mellow arvo at your local break. Their commitment to innovation and accessibility means generations of surfers, young and old, have had the freedom to ride with confidence and comfort, regardless of what’s in their wallet.
So next time you zip up an Adrenalin wetsuit, remember the story behind it—a passion for the ocean, a drive to make surfing accessible, and the promise that no matter how tough times get, the waves are always waiting, and Adrenalin will help keep you in them.
